This issue began with a complaint. A reader wrote to say that every recommendation we print eventually ruins the place it recommends, and asked what we intended to do about it.

It is a fair charge and not a new one. Our answer, imperfectly, is this issue: eleven destinations considered specifically in their off months, when the queue is short and the money is more useful to the people receiving it.

There is a version of travel writing that treats a place as a product with a peak season and a bargain bin. We would rather treat November in Rome as its own thing, not a discount on July.
